Watermarks are recognizable images in paper that appear lighter when viewed by transparent light made on paper during production process are used as anti-counterfeiting device on money and securities. In 1818, new method to produce watermarks by impressing a pattern on grid was applied at the factory of state paper provision center in Saint-Petersburg. This method was later applied in all other countries as it simplified production process making it easier to make the most complex and well-defined patterns.
